Liverpool fans have picked up on a peculiar new corner kick routine introduced by Arne Slot during the preseason match against Sevilla.
Slot’s debut match at Anfield as Liverpool’s manager on August 11 saw the Reds secure a 4-1 victory over the La Liga side. The game showcased standout performances, particularly from Luis Diaz, who scored twice, and Diogo Jota along with Trey Nyoni, who each found the net as well.
Amidst the action, what caught the attention of many was an unusual corner kick strategy implemented by Slot. As observed by journalist Lewis Steele on X, the routine begins with the entire team gathering in a tight cluster near the back corner of the penalty area, on the same side from which the corner is delivered.
Once the ball is kicked, the players suddenly disperse and charge into the box, creating a moment of confusion for the opposing defenders. This orchestrated chaos is designed to leave key attackers unmarked, increasing the chances of a successful header or shot on goal.
This tactic almost paid off during the match, particularly in the 60th minute, when a corner taken using this method saw Virgil van Dijk, known for his aerial prowess, find himself relatively unchallenged as he connected with the ball. Although he didn’t score on this occasion, the strategy showed promise.
As the Premier League season unfolds, Liverpool will likely continue refining this corner kick routine, and with more practice, it could become a powerful tool in their set-piece arsenal.
