One Liverpool player appears to be on the verge of leaving Anfield this month, with several clubs reportedly interested in securing his services.
Recent reports have revealed that a deal was nearly struck in June to sell Joe Gomez to Newcastle for £45m, with Anthony Gordon moving to Liverpool for £75m. However, both deals ultimately fell through, casting uncertainty over the defender’s future.
Graeme Bailey of HITC reports that the 27-year-old is now considering a move away from Merseyside, as new manager Arne Slot cannot guarantee him regular playing time this season. Bailey also mentions that Brentford, West Ham, and Crystal Palace are eager to bring the Londoner back to his home city, while Newcastle remains interested.
In sharing this update on social media, Bailey highlighted that Gomez feels unsettled by Liverpool’s willingness to include him in a potential swap deal for Gordon. Given his nine years of service at Liverpool, being the sole survivor from the Brendan Rodgers era and amassing 217 appearances under Jurgen Klopp, it’s understandable why Gomez might feel disrespected by the club’s actions.
Gomez has been a reliable and versatile player for Liverpool, especially during injury crises, and Klopp has praised him as a ‘sensational footballer’. Thus, considering him dispensable for a new signing, despite Gordon’s potential, seems unfair given Gomez’s contributions.
James Pearce of The Athletic has stated that Liverpool won’t push Gomez towards the exit and that the Newcastle move was a circumstantial proposition. However, the situation indicates that the 27-year-old may no longer be seen as indispensable by the club’s hierarchy.
While a return to London might be appealing to Gomez after this summer’s events, Liverpool fans will hope that any differences can be resolved, allowing him to remain a valuable part of the squad at Anfield.
