Following Argentina’s Copa America victory, Enzo Fernandez shared a video that captured him and his teammates singing a song labeled as “abusive” and “discriminatory” by the French Football Federation. This incident has led Fernandez to issue an apology on social media, and Chelsea has initiated disciplinary proceedings against him.
The video has sparked anger among Fernandez’s Chelsea teammates, with Wesley Fofana calling the chant “unabashed racism” and David Datro Fofana also condemning it. The controversy has reportedly disrupted Chelsea’s pre-season plans, causing a rift within the team. However, Liverpool’s Alexis Mac Allister has defended his international teammate.
In an interview with Argentina’s Urbana Play FM, Mac Allister said, “You have to be careful with what you say or do, especially in Europe where they are much more sensitive about these issues. The reality is that we are not a racist country; we don’t talk about racism as much here. Enzo has already apologized and explained the situation. We know him well and we know he didn’t mean any harm. He’s not a racist.”
Both Chelsea and FIFA are investigating the incident, which means Fernandez and his teammates could face further disciplinary action. The club now faces the challenge of easing tensions in the dressing room as the new Premier League season approaches. Fernandez is currently taking a break after helping Argentina defend their Copa America title and is not due to return to Chelsea immediately.
