The Argentina national team is facing backlash after Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez posted a live video from the team bus, capturing players singing a song deemed racist. This incident led the French Football Federation to file an official complaint, as the chant referenced the African heritage of several French players, a song originating from the 2022 World Cup.
Chelsea has initiated disciplinary action against Fernandez, who was filming the celebration after the Copa America win. Given that others were involved in singing the offensive chant, it is possible that other clubs might also take action against their players.
Liverpool fans are understandably worried about whether Alexis Mac Allister was present during the incident. However, reports indicate that Mac Allister was not on the bus when the chant was sung. According to the Daily Mail, which cited Argentine sources, Mac Allister and Lionel Messi were not present. Messi stayed in Miami due to a serious ankle injury sustained during the final, while Mac Allister was elsewhere.
Argentine outlet La Nacion confirmed Mac Allister’s absence from the bus. In response to the incident, Fernandez issued an apology on social media, stating, “I want to apologise for a video posted on my Instagram channel during the national team celebrations. The song includes highly offensive language and there is absolutely no excuse for these words. I stand against discrimination in all forms and apologise for getting caught up in the euphoria of our Copa America celebrations. That video, that moment, those words, do not reflect my beliefs or my character. I am truly sorry.”
Since the incident, Mac Allister shared a photo of himself with the Copa America trophy on his Instagram Stories, seemingly taken on a plane, further indicating his absence from the bus during the controversial chant.
