Last season, there were moments when it seemed Xabi Alonso might take the helm at Liverpool. However, that scenario didn’t materialize, and the Spaniard has now turned his attention to reinforcing his Bayer Leverkusen squad. Florian Plettenberg reports that Leverkusen is keen on signing Liverpool’s Joel Matip as a free agent.
“Bayer 04 Leverkusen is very interested in signing Joel Matip as a free agent! First talks took place. Xabi Alonso wants to strengthen the team with an experienced central defender,” Plettenberg shared.
Unfortunately, Jurgen Klopp’s hopes of extending Matip’s contract at Liverpool haven’t come to fruition. As a result, Matip is in search of a new club while still on the mend from a serious knee injury.
A move to Bayer Leverkusen could be an excellent opportunity for Matip. The 32-year-old defender still has much to offer, and joining Alonso’s team would allow him to continue competing at a high level. Matip, a fan favorite at Anfield, would surely receive a warm welcome if he ever returned, much like the affection shown to his potential new manager.
With Liverpool set to face the Bundesliga champions in the Champions League next season, there’s an intriguing possibility of a double homecoming for Matip and Alonso. Furthermore, Matip’s efforts in earning his coaching badges with Liverpool hint at a potential future role in management, adding another layer of excitement to his career trajectory.
