Liverpool’s pursuit of their first summer signing has hit several roadblocks, with the transfer window rapidly closing. The club has been linked with potential moves for Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United and Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad, but neither deal has come to fruition.
As new manager Arne Slot waits for his first addition to the squad, the Reds are set to begin their season against Ipswich Town without any fresh faces, apart from the change in the managerial seat from Jurgen Klopp to Slot.
The failure to secure Zubimendi, who was seen as an ideal candidate for Liverpool’s number 6 role, has been particularly disappointing for Slot, who was eager to bolster his midfield with the Spanish talent. However, Liverpool’s attention may now be shifting to other options.
According to HITC, the club has been approached about the availability of Italian midfielder Marco Verratti. Although Verratti is not in the prime of his career, he has been offered a chance to return to Europe from Al-Arabi in Qatar. Liverpool isn’t the only Premier League club to be contacted about Verratti; Manchester City, Arsenal, and Manchester United have also been alerted to his availability.
Verratti, known for his playmaking abilities, has drawn comparisons to Barcelona legends Xavi and Andres Iniesta during his time at PSG, particularly from Brazilian star Neymar. However, while Verratti’s experience could be valuable, it’s clear that Liverpool will need to weigh whether the veteran midfielder can still offer the dynamism required for Slot’s vision at Anfield.
