Virgil van Dijk has revealed that Liverpool have yet to offer him a contract extension, and he believes the club could benefit from bringing in new talent this summer. Despite starting in the 4-1 victory over Sevilla at Anfield, questions linger about his future, with only one year remaining on his current deal.
Van Dijk, who joined Liverpool from Southampton for £75 million in 2018, has been a cornerstone of the team’s success, helping them secure both the Premier League and Champions League titles. However, with his contract nearing its end, the Reds risk losing the Dutch defender for free next summer if an agreement isn’t reached.
In a recent interview, Van Dijk shared that there has been no progress on a new deal. “Nothing has changed at the moment,” he told The Independent. His uncertain future adds to Liverpool’s concerns, as other key players like Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold are also entering the final year of their contracts.
Van Dijk also expressed his belief that Liverpool need to strengthen their squad, especially with the demanding season ahead. He remains confident in the club’s ability to make the right moves. “I think we should make some signings, given how long the season will be. I trust the club to do what’s best for us and build a squad that can compete on all fronts,” he added.
