Joe Gomez’s future at Liverpool hangs in the balance this summer after a potential move to Newcastle United fell through. The Reds had initially agreed on a £45 million deal for Gomez, which was part of a larger package that would have brought Anthony Gordon to Anfield for £75 million. However, the deal was abandoned as Newcastle found alternative ways to comply with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules.
Currently enjoying his holiday after participating in the European Championships with England, Gomez is aware of the situation and is expected to return to the AXA Training Centre for pre-season training under new Liverpool head coach Arne Slot. Although Newcastle has not revisited their interest, Gomez has been attracting attention from several other clubs, though Liverpool has yet to receive any formal offers.
Liverpool remains interested in Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon, especially with Mohamed Salah entering the final year of his contract and uncertainties surrounding Luis Diaz’s long-term future. However, Newcastle no longer urgently needs to sell Gordon, and his asking price may increase as a result.
As Liverpool’s longest-serving current player, having joined the club nine years ago, Gomez was one of the most reliable performers last season but only started four games in his preferred centre-back role.
If Gomez were to depart, Liverpool would need to reinforce their central defense, with Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, and Jarell Quansah being the only other regular options in that position ahead of the August 30 transfer deadline.
