Trent Alexander-Arnold recently addressed the speculation surrounding Jurgen Klopp potentially taking over as England manager. Following Gareth Southgate’s expected departure after Euro 2024, some had speculated that Klopp might be a candidate for the job. However, prominent journalist David Ornstein has downplayed this possibility, citing Klopp’s need for a break from football.
In a candid conversation with The Mirror’s Jeremy Armstrong, Trent reflected on these rumors. When asked about Klopp potentially managing England, he responded with surprise. “I’d be shocked! When he announced he was leaving Liverpool, it was clear he needed a break,” Trent said. “From our conversations and what he’s shared on social media, it seems like he’s really enjoying his time off. I can’t imagine him jumping into such a high-pressure role right now.”
The 25-year-old defender fondly recalled his time working with Klopp, noting their strong bond and the many memorable moments they shared. “I loved every minute with him at Liverpool. We achieved so much together and had a great relationship. If he ever did take the England job in the future, it would be amazing to work with him again,” Trent added.
Despite his affection for Klopp, Trent expressed concerns about the intense scrutiny that comes with being England manager. “The level of criticism in that role can be overwhelming. It’s not just professional—it can become very personal, and I wouldn’t want to see him go through that,” he said.
Trent’s comments help to dispel any immediate expectations of Klopp taking the reins of the England national team. It appears that, for now, Klopp is content enjoying his well-deserved break from the demands of football management.
