Arsenal has reportedly struck a deal with Bologna to acquire Italian defender Riccardo Calafiori. The Gunners will pay nearly £40 million for the 21-year-old, with both clubs agreeing on a structured payment plan.
Calafiori had already settled on personal terms weeks ago and is set to sign a five-year contract at the Emirates Stadium. Despite Italy’s early exit from Euro 2024, negotiations moved slowly as Bologna aimed to secure a favorable deal, partly due to a hefty sell-on clause owed to Calafiori’s former club, Basel.
Liverpool had shown interest in the defender following his standout performances at Euro 2024 but did not make an official bid. According to Fabrizio Romano, the only hurdle left is resolving the sell-on clause, which entitles Basel to half of the transfer fee.
The total fee for Calafiori includes £34 million upfront and an additional £4.2 million in potential add-ons. This move marks Arsenal’s second signing of the summer, following David Raya’s permanent transfer after his loan spell last season.
Calafiori’s arrival could prompt Jakub Kiwior’s departure from the Emirates, with Italian clubs expressing interest in the Polish international. Kiwior, keen on regular playing time, might see his opportunities diminish with the new competition.
After extensive negotiations, the transfer appears to be progressing smoothly. Calafiori’s agent, Alessandro Lucci, has played a crucial role, engaging in behind-the-scenes discussions and facilitating positive talks.
Arsenal is eager to finalize Calafiori’s signing promptly. The defender is currently training individually with a personal coach, as seen in videos posted online. His goal is to join the north London club in time to integrate before their pre-season tour of America.
