Recent reports from Germany suggested that Liverpool had “expressed interest” in RB Leipzig defender Mohamed Simakan, but club sources have clarified their stance.
Philipp Hinze of Sky Germany mentioned that both Liverpool and Atletico Madrid were keeping tabs on Simakan, though no formal offers had been made. The 24-year-old’s versatility in playing both center-back and right-back, along with his impressive performances in the Bundesliga, made these links plausible. With a potential price tag of around £38 million, Simakan seemed a feasible addition to Liverpool’s squad under manager Arne Slot.
However, Liverpool have distanced themselves from these rumors. According to Ian Doyle of the Liverpool Echo, the club is “not presently considering a move” for the French defender. This follows a pattern of the Reds dismissing various speculative links, including those with Sporting CP’s Goncalo Inacio, Porto’s Alan Varela, Atalanta’s Ederson, and Athletic Club’s Nico Williams.
It appears that Liverpool’s recruitment team, overseen by Michael Edwards and led by sporting director Richard Hughes, prefers to brief the media on what targets they are not pursuing, maintaining secrecy about their actual intentions. This approach, initiated by Edwards and continued by his successors Julian Ward and Hughes, has been a hallmark of the club’s transfer strategy.
Liverpool have also been linked with several other players, including Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi, Bologna’s Riccardo Calafiori, Eintracht Frankfurt’s Willian Pacho, and Sporting CP’s Ousmane Diomande. Yet, as history shows, the Reds are likely to surprise fans with their transfer moves, keeping their true targets under wraps until deals are finalized.
