Darwin Nunez leaves Copa America with a bronze medal following Uruguay’s victory in the third-place playoff, thanks to a late goal from Luis Suarez.
Despite the turmoil following their semi-final defeat to Colombia, Uruguay managed to refocus for their match against Canada. Nunez retained his starting position amidst an ongoing investigation involving him and 10 of his teammates, with coach Marcelo Bielsa showing confidence in his No. 19.
Nunez had a quiet game, registering only 17 touches, three completed passes, and a single shot on goal. However, he did make a notable contribution by setting up Maxi Araujo for a chance, though the winger’s effort was saved by Canada’s goalkeeper, Dayne St Clair.
Uruguay took an early lead with a goal from Rodrigo Bentancur, but Canada equalized through Ismael Kone’s overhead kick. With the scores level at halftime, Bielsa made several changes, substituting both Nunez and Manuel Ugarte, and bringing on Suarez. Canada then took the lead with a goal from Jonathan David, but Suarez’s late equalizer forced the match into a penalty shootout.
Uruguay triumphed 4-3 in the shootout, with goalkeeper Sergio Rochet making a crucial save and Alphonso Davies missing a panenka attempt. While the team celebrated their bronze medals, the mood was subdued, with Colombia and Argentina set to compete in the final on Sunday.
Nunez’s tournament started strong with goals in the opening group games against Panama and Bolivia but ended on a quieter note. WATCH THE GOAL BELOW:
