Liverpool manager Arne Slot has reassured striker Darwin Nunez of his central role in the upcoming season. Nunez, who ended last season with a goal drought, had sparked transfer rumors by removing images of himself in a Liverpool kit from his Instagram.
Despite speculation linking him to Barcelona, Slot’s conversation with Nunez during the Copa America, where the striker scored twice in three matches, emphasized his importance in Liverpool’s plans.
Slot acknowledged Nunez’s versatility and potential, noting that he had played multiple positions under former coach Jurgen Klopp. The new Liverpool boss shared his vision for Nunez’s role in the team, stating “I just told him that, from what I saw, he played multiple positions and what positions – or position – I see him playing,” said the Liverpool head coach. “I assume he’ll fit really well into this playing style because I like him. I’ve told him that already, he’s one of the players I’ve spoken to.”
Reflecting on his initial exposure to Liverpool’s atmosphere, Slot recounted his visit to Anfield in February 2017 when Liverpool triumphed over Tottenham 2-0. Invited by former Reds No. 2 Pep Lijnders and ex-sporting director Michael Edwards to scout Pedro Chirivella, Slot was impressed by the strong connection between the team and its supporters.
He noted, “I got a feel for the club. It was before they won the Premier League and Champions League under Jurgen. Everyone was positive even back then without the team winning trophies.”
